Flooring - Part 1

One of the most effective ways to change the atmosphere of a home is by replacing the flooring or painting the walls. Today, let's discuss the process of changing the flooring, considering factors such as cost and material selection.

Factors Influencing Cost:

The primary factors determining the cost include the material of the flooring and the size of the area to be covered. However, several other considerations should be taken into account:

  • Floor Layout: The shape of the floor space matters. If the area has additional features like cabinets or an island table, it may require extra work, leading to increased costs. Unusual floor shapes, such as pentagons or diamonds, can also raise the overall price. The location of HVAC openings, whether on the wall or in the middle of the floor, can affect the cost due to the need for precise cutting.

  • Floor Pattern: Flooring with patterns, such as herringbone, tends to be more expensive than plain, solid flooring.

  • Installation Method: The chosen flooring material determines the installation method, and this can impact the overall cost. Installation methods include:

  • Stick: Materials like vinyl tiles have a sticky backing, allowing them to be directly applied to the floor.

  • Click Type (Floating Floor): Laminate, vinyl, engineered hardwood, and bamboo can be assembled using a click-type method, similar to puzzle pieces.

  • Glue Down: Some materials, like engineered hardwood and bamboo, require gluing each plank to the floor.

  • Nail Down: Commonly used for hardwood floors, this method involves securing each plank with diagonal nails.

Cost-Effective Flooring Methods:

The most economical ways to install flooring are using stick-on or click-type methods. These are relatively straightforward, and with some guidance from online resources like YouTube, individuals can successfully install these types of flooring. Trying it out in a small room first can help gain confidence, and the process becomes quicker with experience.

For glue-down or nail-down methods, especially when removing carpeting, obtaining multiple detailed quotes is essential. Comparing several quotes and negotiating can often result in a more budget-friendly project. It's advisable to gather around five estimates and negotiate based on the specifics provided in each quote.

In a subsequent article, we will explore the advantages and disadvantages of each flooring material.
